How and when to change the filter sand

First of all, it is recommended to know the model of the filter and read the specifications to know how much sand you have to replace.

Depending on the condition of the water, the size of the filter and the density of use, the time to change it will vary. The smaller the filter, the higher the rate of change.

Normally, in a standard filter, the sand is changed every 3 or 4 years, but in the case of using chemical treatments with copper sulfate (multi-action tablets), it would be advisable to do so every 2 years.

Over the years, the wear of the filter sand can influence the increased consumption of chemical products. Therefore, the pump will work more hours and the electrical consumption will be greater.

If you are not sure how to change the sand in the filter, it is advisable to contact a professional.

A symptom that the filter sand needs to be changed is that it does not clean the water well.

Steps to change the filter sand

  1. Close the stopcocks of the filter selector valve in the “closed” position, close the skimmer and the pool cleaner. If there is no valve in the return pipe, it would be advisable to lower the water level below the impellers.
  2. Empty the sand from the filter.
  3. Clean the inside of the filter once you have emptied it.
  4. Check the condition of the nozzles, they are the filters inside the sand filter, and replace if any are in poor condition.
  5. Add water to cover the pancakes.
  6. Fill the filter with sand, flint or vidromar. We recommend that you change to Vidromar technical glass.
  7. Reopen the water passages.
  8. Place the selector valve in the cleaning position for a few minutes to clean the new sand, then in the rinse position until the water is clear in the sight glass and finally in the filter position.
